Problems with Schools Due to the Increase in Foreign Students
There have always been a few foreign students enrolled, but I think the number has really increased in the past few years.
In the area where I work, there are a lot of Chinese and Filipino students.
Since many of my students were born and raised in Japan, most can speak Japanese.
In many cases, the father is Japanese and the mother is foreign.
Since many mothers cannot speak Japanese at all, interpreters are often needed for interviews, career counseling, and other occasions.
Teachers other than those in the English department seem to be struggling because they can barely speak English.
As teachers, we first need to explain the Japanese school system and cultural differences to foreign parents.
It is very difficult to get them to understand systems unique to Japan, such as university entrance exams.
I think it is extremely difficult for students who cannot speak Japanese to attend Japanese public schools.
As a result, the number of students who are dropping out of school is increasing.
I certainly think the language barrier is significant.
I try my best every day to support such students, however small my contribution may be.
