One of the things that has been bothering me lately is the increase in rental cars used by foreign tourists.
I actually love cars and have always driven sports cars.
People often tell me that I’m unusual for a woman.
Even so, I don’t drive when I travel abroad.
First of all, many countries drive on the right, the complete opposite of Japan’s left-hand drive system.
As a car lover, I sometimes feel the urge to drive, but I give up.
I can read traffic signs in English, but I can’t read the local language at all.
I drive to work every day, and recently I’ve been seeing a lot of rental cars with shockingly ridiculous driving.
You can clearly tell it’s a rental car just by looking at the license plate number.
The overwhelming majority of drivers are foreigners.
What they all have in common is that they drive as if they’re driving on the right, which is unthinkable in Japan.
It seems that there are a lot of cars driving the wrong way.
They also have no idea what the road signs mean.
I have had many scary experiences.
As a result, the number of traffic accidents caused by foreign drivers in Japan is increasing dramatically.
Japan has extremely heavy traffic in and around major cities.
If a foreigner who can’t even read traffic rules in Japanese causes an accident, it can easily be expected to be a major accident.
I would like foreigners driving in Japan to at least memorize the basic traffic signs and rules written in Japanese.
It’s too late once a tragedy has occurred.
