A Traditional Morning Culture in a Certain Region That’s Unusual in Japan

Travel

When I travel abroad, I find myself getting up early because I’m so excited.

In Southeast Asia, food stalls open as early as 6 a.m., so I often frequent them every morning.

In Japan, many coffee shops in different areas also open early in the morning.

For example, in the Tokai region, such as Aichi Prefecture and Gifu.

I live in the Tokyo metropolitan area, so I was surprised when I visited Nagoya for the first time.

At cafes that open early in the morning, you get a free breakfast with every order of coffee or other drink.

Of course, it’s just a light breakfast of bread, but even I, a Japanese person, was surprised.

As a result, the cafes are packed early in the morning, mainly with older customers.

There are also a wide variety of breakfast options depending on the shop and location.

I was surprised by some shops that offer free rice balls, udon noodles, and chawanmushi.

This system is rare in Tokyo coffee shops.

If you’re planning a trip to this area, I highly recommend this morning culture.
