Traditional Japanese Events: May

Society

May 5th is a day when various events are held to pray for the healthy growth of boys.

On this day, carp-shaped streamers are raised.

Nowadays, due to housing issues, the number of households that fly carp streamers has decreased significantly.

Although it is not a traditional event, the term “May Sickness” is often used in May.

What is May Sickness?

It is a general term for mental symptoms seen in working adults and students due to an inability to adapt to a new environment.

Main symptoms include bipolar disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and loss of appetite, and many new employees quit their jobs due to these symptoms.

Seasonally, May is my favorite month.

The snow melts, the new green leaves are beautiful, and it’s a recommended time for those who enjoy hiking.

Modern Japanese summers are unusually hot, so I think this time of year, with little rain and temperatures neither too hot nor too cold, is a good season for hiking and traveling.

It’s still too cold for swimming, but the sea is very beautiful.

This time of year is recommended for those who want to go to the beach, as it gets very crowded during the summer and the sea isn’t as beautiful.
