Why Japanese People Are So Passive
It’s all because of education.
At the school where I work, the overwhelming majority of teachers focus on one-sided lectures.
Classes are based solely on memorization in order to pass entrance exams.
Japan’s entrance exam system has its problems, but that’s because questions that require students to think for themselves are rarely asked.
Studying subjects like English, Japanese, and history is all about memorization.
As a result, I think Japanese people have a very high level of memorization.
Students with excellent memorization skills tend to have higher academic scores and do well at school.
However, while they may excel at memorization, they are actually quite poor at problem-solving and thinking for themselves.
They simply accept everything their teachers say without questioning it even a little.
I deliberately reduce the amount of time I spend lecturing and create more time for students to think.
I want my students to learn the importance of being able to express their opinions clearly and to accept and consider the opinions of others.
