The Real Reason Many Japanese People Cannot Speak English

It is not only about grammar.

It is about not knowing how to express themselves.

Many people say that Japanese people cannot speak English because they are bad at grammar, pronunciation, or listening.

But I think the real problem is much deeper.

The problem is not only English.

The problem is that many Japanese people are not used to expressing themselves clearly, even in Japanese.

They are not used to saying:

“I think…”

“I want…”

“I don’t want…”

“I disagree.”

“This is my opinion.”

“This is who I am.”

Before speaking English, a person needs something to say.

And this is where many Japanese people struggle.

In Japan, children are often taught to read the atmosphere, follow the group, avoid standing out, and not disturb harmony. They are trained to choose the “safe” answer, not their own answer.

At school, students often learn how to find the correct answer.

But life is not always about correct answers.

Communication is not a test paper.

Speaking English is not only about choosing the right grammar pattern. It is about showing your thoughts, your feelings, your choices, and your personality.

If someone is afraid to express their own opinion in Japanese, it is almost impossible for them to suddenly become confident in English.

English exposes the problem.

It does not create the problem.

Many Japanese people say, “I want to speak English.”

But what do they actually want to say?

That question is often missing.

They want a phrase.

They want a template.

They want a textbook answer.

They want someone else to tell them what to say.

But real communication does not work like that.

Real communication requires ownership.

You have to own your words.

You have to own your opinion.

You have to take responsibility for what you say.

This may be one reason why some Japanese people can study English for many years and still cannot speak it naturally.

They know vocabulary.

They know grammar.

They passed exams.

But they never trained themselves to speak from their own mind.

English education in Japan often focuses too much on correctness and not enough on self-expression.

Students are afraid of making mistakes.

They are afraid of being laughed at.

They are afraid of being different.

So they stay silent.

But silence does not build communication.

Perfect grammar without a voice is not real language.

Language is not only a school subject.

Language is a tool to say, “This is me.”

This is why I believe the real reason many Japanese people cannot speak English is not simply poor English education.

It is a deeper social problem.

Many Japanese people have been trained to hide themselves.

They have been trained to adjust.

They have been trained to wait for instructions.

They have been trained to depend on the group.

But English requires a different attitude.

English asks you to speak.

English asks you to choose.

English asks you to say what you mean.

And that can feel scary for people who were never encouraged to have their own voice.

This is why learning English is not only about studying grammar.

It is also about learning how to become visible.

It is about learning how to say:

“This is what I think.”

“This is what I choose.”

“This is what I refuse.”

“This is what I believe.”

In that sense, English can be more than a language.

It can be a mirror.

It shows whether you really have your own voice.

And for many Japanese people, that may be the hardest part.

Not pronunciation.

Not grammar.

Not vocabulary.

The hardest part is learning how to stop hiding behind silence.

English does not only ask, “Can you speak?”

It asks a deeper question.

“Do you know who you are?”
